Webcamp 4
I was at Webcamp 4 last Wednesday (26 May 2010) at Mindvalley, upon invitation from Adrian Teh, co-founder of Leanis Solutions and Highrise. I felt I was having a transition from an Electrical & Electronic Engineer to someone that talks about web. After all, that’s what I wanna do, and looks like I have to start from zero.
Here were the topics covered:
1. Ditesh Gathani, Free Software Developer — <!DOCTYPE html>
2. Kamal Fariz Mahyuddin, Owner of bitfluent.com — How Bitfluent does test driven development with great success
3. Ong Teng Siong, Co-founder of GraffitiGeo.com — Lessons Learned from Starting a Company in Silicon Valley as a Malaysian
4. Hani Khaursar, MV Mistress of Bliss — Is Your Online Image Ruining Your Webutation?
5. Wu Han, MindValley Sitting Buffalo — Wu Han’s UX Series Ep. 1
Of all the speakers, the one that astonished me was Ong Teng Siong. He co-founded GraffitiGeo.com with 2-3 other friends while at the University of Illinois. Funded by Y Combinator, After about 6-7 months, the company was acquired by Loopt, for a figure of 7. Well, I was not so interested about the money after the acquisition, but I was more excited seeing someone from Malaysia who actually did it. There were not many Malaysians who had the maturity on dotcom entreneurship, and those who made it were those who actually based in US. One of them was Alvin from Plurk.com.
It’s amazing to get to hear from someone like Siong. The only pitiful thing was that the session was too short, and there was not much details on the journey of his entrepreneurship. Maybe one day I should get hold of him and have a chat.
